Baalti - MELB - Howler
Howler
Vivid Corals surfaces for the first time with a diverse live/DJ microcosm of the obscure ecosystems these artists inhabit.
Inspired by the interconnectedness of life on Sea Country, a night of varying sonics has been carefully curated as a living system - Function from connection, not control... Space from presence, not design... Resilience from diversity, not uniformity... and Energy from exchange, not hierarchy.
Moving from listening room to body music, the programme will naturally meander between a multitude of genres, with entropy and self-organisation intrinsic to this movement. Join us at Naarm's DIY epicentre 'SPIT' (central Footscray) for an evening of subtidal inspired oddities and support traditional custodianship of Gunaikurnai Sea Country.

Fundraiser details:
All proceeds from ticket sales going directly to Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) with options to additionally donate. Altered States Tapes x Vivid Corals cassettes also for sale.
GLaWAC is a registered Aboriginal party (RAP) for the Gunaikurnai, representing the five clans of Gunaikurnai Country (Brataualung, Brayakaulung, Brabralung, Tatungalung and Krauatungalung). The Gunaikurnai people are recognised by the Federal Court and the State of Victoria as the Traditional Owners of a large area of Gippsland spanning from Warragul in the west to the Snowy River in the east, and from the Great Divide in the north to the coast in the south, approx. 10% of the state.
"We see no distinction between the land and the sea.
It is all a part of our Country. But our connection to the coastal and marine parts of our Country is rarely recognised, so we need to be clear about how important it is to us."
Sea Country is way of life for Gunaikurnai people and often viewed as the life force of Country. As such, GLaWAC is currently working towards restoring cultural connection and custodianship of Sea Country by:
"1. Looking into extending management boundaries of Aboriginal Title land to include adjacent coastal values.
Undertaking research into the feasibility and location of new marine parks, including cultural parks where our submerged values can be better protected.
Establishing a sea-ranger program and build up the skills of our mob in managing sea country.
Negotiating with government for the allocation of commercial fishing licences to Gunaikurnai people."
Vivid Corals acknowledges it’s existence and presence operating on stolen, unceded sovereign lands, the lands of Wurundjeri-Woiwurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation and the lands of Muwinina peoples of Nipaluna and Melurkedee peoples of Taluna/Tahun’e-linah, both of the Southeast Tribe of Lutruwita. We acknowledge, honour and pay respects to their elders past, present and future, and extend that respect to all First Nations and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We firmly honour First Peoples enduring and resilient connection and custodianship of the land, seas and skies in which we gather on, are inspired by and form connections from. Importantly we recognise our impact living within and benefiting from colonial structures and commit to fighting as allies to First Peoples for the destruction of all forms of colonialism and imperialism.
Country has immemorially been a place of interconnected culture, community and ceremony and we promise to work towards upholding those values when curating space and intention for our events. This statement hopes to act as a reminder of the history and traditions of storytelling and musicianship practiced by First Peoples and that this inspires us as we gather in collective catharsis and movement.
Let this also be a call to stand together as accomplices to the ongoing fight against systematic oppression of all First Peoples, within so-called Australia and beyond - and commit to doing so not just through words, but meaningful action and community building.
As always, free entry for mob - email us at [email protected]
